First Seedling to Bloom 2016

It has begun!  This is the first bloom with many more to come in the next few weeks.  Not sure if I can keep up with it all - but it sure is fun!

I couldn't help trying out the watercolor enhancement in Photoshop.  Someday I may take up painting again.

  4. From a novice: Jim I saved seeds from these hips: Golden Showers, Polka, Garden Sun, Dr. Huey (!), Sunny Knockout, Carefree Wonder, Mme Louise Odier, Burgundy Iceberg, Royal Amethyst. All but the last have survived for 20 years with no spraying. Have you used any of these in your program? If so, how did they do? It's fun to follow your progress!

    1. Hi Carol, I've used Sunny Knockout, Dr. Huey, and regular Iceberg in breeding. I have a rootstock that came from Dr. Huey as the pollen parent that I use. I haven't kept any of the seedlings from Sunny Knockout or Iceberg. Using your favorite, cleanest roses in breeding is probably the most important strategy in rose breeding.

  5. Jim thanks so much! What do you mean by a "clean" Rose? Also, I'm about to try to plant my 179 seeds. I'm sure notall of them will even be viable (probably most!). Can you point me to the place on your page of instruction for planting seeds? Thanks again!

  6. Hi Carol, to me clean means, relatively free from diseases so that you do not have to spray. I don't spray for any diseases. I don't think that mention specifically how to plant seeds on my blog (I'll have to do that someday!), but you can find lots of information on the RHA forum which is searchable - http://rosebreeders.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=2 . Best wishes for something really great from your seeds!

  7. Jim this so helpful. I went to the link and found several notes on rose seeds. If I get anything I'll let you know. At this point I would be thrilled to see even one seedling!
