Seedling Benches, Starting Over
I suppose that 17 years is plenty long enough for seedling benches made out of wood, wire fencing and screen to last. For the past 3 or 4 years in fact, we have been propping up rotting 2" X 4"s on one of the seedling benches that has been threatening to collapse. So this year we decided to rebuild all of them and replenish them with brand new potting soil. Each raised bed is 20 feet long by 5 feet wide and all of the boards are put together with screws so as to increase sturdiness.
Two down, two to go!
I am so glad to see you posting again. Having not seen anything from you in so long I got worried. I thought something may have happened to you. Glad that is not the case. Quite an undertaking there. No wonder why you have been gone for so long. I am curious to see how the germinations come along this year with such a late start. The early heat and no rain has caught me of guard. Take care
ReplyDeleteJust curious about the black plastic? Drainage?
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave!
ReplyDeleteHi Aprille, the black plastic helps to protect the sideboards from constant moisture which helps to prevent rotting. Most of the sideboards on my old seedling beds looked pretty good. It was only the supporting boards underneath that had areas that were breaking down.
